Nespresso Vertuo Next review: the cheapest way into Vertuo, with a catch

If you’re looking for a Nespresso Vertuo Next review before the current sale disappears, you’re in the right place. Vertuo is Nespresso’s newer pod system, and right now the Next is a very cheap way into it: £69.99 at Currys, checked 28 Sep 2026, down from £149.99. That’s a sale price, so it may not last. I haven’t tested this in person. My verdict is based on the specs Currys lists, dated UK prices, Currys owner reviews and the published tests I name and link below, and there’s one real worry I’ll be upfront about.

Nespresso Vertuo Next review: the short answer

Buy the Vertuo Next if you want Vertuo coffee, from a short espresso to a big mug, for as little money as possible and you’re happy buying Nespresso’s own pods. At £69.99 at Currys (checked 28 Sep 2026, a sale price that may end), it’s less than half the price of the Original-system Nespresso CitiZ at the same shop, and it has a bigger tank.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants to buy supermarket pods, as Vertuo machines only take Nespresso’s own. It’s also not for anyone who puts reliability above price, because one UK review site warns about it (more on that below). If either of those is you, the CitiZ is worth a look, though it costs more up front.

• Don’t mix it up with the bundle: Currys also sells a separate Vertuo bundle (model XN911NG0) with an Aeroccino milk frother and 12 pods for £99.00, checked 28 Sep 2026, shown as “Was £199.99”, so that’s a sale price that may end too. It’s a different listing from the machine reviewed here, so check the model code before you buy.
• Other shops: I couldn’t confirm prices at Nespresso UK, Argos, John Lewis or AO, so Currys is the only price I’m giving.
• Pods: I couldn’t confirm a live price for Nespresso’s own Vertuo pods, so there’s no figure here and no cost per cup either. Check current pod prices on Nespresso UK before you buy.

What you get: specs and what’s in the box

Currys lists the Vertuo Next with a 1.1-litre water tank, a 1500W rating, an adjustable cup stand, automatic power-off and storage for the 0.75m power cord. It measures 317 x 140 x 429mm (height x width x depth) and weighs 4.3kg, so it’s slim but deep, which BBC Good Food also points out. There’s no milk frother. Currys doesn’t list a pump pressure for this model, and I’m not going to guess one.

In the box, Currys lists the machine, a Nespresso capsule welcome set and the user manual, so you’ll have something to brew straight away. The manufacturer’s warranty is two years, according to Currys.

The main thing to understand is how Vertuo works. The machine reads a barcode on each pod, so the pod you pick decides the drink, which keeps things very simple. BBC Good Food lists five drink sizes for the Next: espresso, double espresso, gran lungo, mug and alto, the last being a large carafe-style serving. That range is its big selling point over Nespresso’s Original machines.

Who it isn’t for: latte and cappuccino drinkers who don’t already have a way to froth milk. There’s no frother, so budget for one separately. My guide to the best milk frothers covers the options.

The pods: Vertuo means Nespresso’s own

This is the big trade-off with any Vertuo machine. It takes Nespresso’s own Vertuo pods only, and there are no supermarket-brand compatibles, so you can’t shop around for a cheaper pack. TechRadar also notes that the pods aren’t recyclable in household collections, and BBC Good Food mentions that they go through Nespresso’s own recycling scheme instead.

Original-system machines such as the CitiZ are different, because they take compatible pods from other brands, sold in supermarkets. I couldn’t verify what Nespresso charges for Vertuo pods, so I can’t give you a cost per cup. The honest summary is that with Vertuo you pay whatever Nespresso charges, and you should check that before you commit.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who likes shopping around for pods, or who wants the lowest cost per cup over a few years rather than the lowest price on day one.

What reviewers and owners say

Most of the published tests I found are positive. BBC Good Food’s review likes the range of pods, the one-button brewing, the big tank and the reliable crema, but marks it down for its deep footprint and noisy spinning brew. BBC Good Food also named it “best for drink versatility” in its best Nespresso machines guide, at a time when it cost more than it does now. Expert Reviews praises the stylish design, the sturdy sliding lock and consistent coffee, while noting there are no milk options. TechRadar found it very easy and mess-free, but reminds you that you’ll need a separate frother for lattes and can only use official pods.

The warning comes from Balance Journal, a smaller UK review site, which puts the Vertuo Next in its “avoid” group because of reliability complaints it gathered from Trustpilot.

Currys owners paint a happier picture: 4.7 out of 5 across 109 reviews (checked 28 Sep 2026). I’d rather show you both views than only the flattering one. A retailer star rating often reflects the first few weeks of ownership, while reliability problems tend to show up later, so I wouldn’t treat the rating as the final word.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who’d rather pay more for peace of mind. If a machine that might not go the distance would really annoy you, check the retailer’s returns and the two-year warranty terms before buying.

Vertuo Next vs Nespresso CitiZ

These use different pod systems, so the choice is about what you drink and how you want to buy pods.

• Price: the Next is £69.99 at Currys (a sale price that may end) and the CitiZ is £174.99 at Currys, both checked 28 Sep 2026.
• Pods: the Next takes Nespresso’s own Vertuo pods only; the CitiZ takes Original pods, including supermarket compatibles.
• Cup sizes: the Next covers everything from espresso to a large alto, per BBC Good Food; the CitiZ sticks to espresso and lungo, per Expert Reviews.
• Tank: 1.1 litres on the Next against 1 litre on the CitiZ, according to Currys.
• Pressure: Currys lists 19 bar for the CitiZ and doesn’t give a figure for the Next.

Downsides

• Reliability questions. Balance Journal cites reliability complaints and puts it on its avoid list.
• Pod lock-in. Nespresso’s own Vertuo pods only, and I couldn’t confirm what they cost.
• No milk frother. You’ll need a separate one for milky drinks, as every source I read points out.
• Noise and depth. BBC Good Food found it noisy while brewing and says it takes up a lot of worktop depth.
• The price may not last. £69.99 is a sale price; Currys’ was-price is £149.99.
